Ask, Don’t Ask

Don’t ask me if I never tried;
    I did.
If I never felt bad that i lied;
    I did.
If I never wondered if I died;
    I did.
If I never counted to forever when I hide;
    I did.

Don’t ask me if I know if this is me, embittered;
    I don’t.
If I know if this is me, bewildered,
    I don’t.
If I know if this is me, dismembered,
    I don’t.
If I know if this is me, unremembered,
    I don’t.

But do ask me if this me, confused,
    It is.
If this is me waiting to be refused,
    It is.
If this is me, waiting on, abused,
    It is.
If this is me, crying, reduced.
    It is.
